| We are a small, non-profit organisation located in Ficksburg, which is a rural town on the border of Lesotho. Ficksburg has been identified as one of the poorest towns in the Free State (Setsotho IDP, 2002/2003), and one where the incidence of HIV/AIDS is highest, being a border town on major transportation routes, and an industrial town employing predominantly seasonal labour for the clothing, cherry and asparagus industries. Because of this we have a very high incidence of child headed households, and we formed The Sunbeam Kids Foundation to provide support to these children. Our future depends on what kind of adults these children become.
Statistics about the HIV / AIDS pandemic change on a daily basis, but it is safe to say that there are millions of children in Southern Africa who have been orphaned due to the disease, and the number grows daily. For the latest statistics you can visit The AIDS Foundation website.
